This project required a complete, high-specification residential build, designed not just for aesthetics, but for exceptional longevity and year-round comfort. The result is a luxurious timber home, measuring an impressive 16m x 6.8m, complete with a generous wrap-around deck, matching garage, and a truly bespoke interior finish.

1. The Challenge: Building a Residential Home on an Island

The client required a large, permanent, three-bedroom dwelling suitable for residential use, sited on a challenging location in Anglesey. The brief demanded a structure that combined the rustic charm of a log cabin with the energy efficiency and high-end finish of a contemporary new build.

Furthermore, the client needed a true turnkey solution—meaning Timber Building Specialists were responsible for every phase: from elevated base preparation to the final internal fit-out, including flooring, electrics, plumbing, and appliances.

Key Specifications:

  • Size: 16m x 6.8m (108.8 sq. metres / 1171 sq. feet)
  • Log Thickness: 95mm Solid Wall Logs
  • Insulation: 150mm Roof and Floor Insulation
  • Exterior Finish: Antique Pine Stain
  • Windows & Doors: Pre-painted Black (Residential Grade)
  • Additional Structure: 3m x 5m Matching Garage

2. Engineering the Structure: Logs, Insulation, and Base

For a structure of this scale intended for year-round habitation, exceptional material selection and engineering were paramount.

The Power of 95mm Solid Wall Logs

The foundation of the structure is the use of 95mm solid wall logs. While many recreational cabins use 44mm or 68mm logs, 95mm timber provides:

  1. Structural Integrity: Superior strength to support the large, 16-metre span and withstand coastal weather conditions.
  2. Thermal Mass: The sheer density of the timber naturally regulates temperature, making the interior cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
  3. Acoustic Dampening: The thickness significantly reduces external noise, contributing to a peaceful living environment.

Achieving Superior Thermal Efficiency

To meet modern residential standards, the thermal envelope was heavily focused on. We incorporated 150mm insulation in both the roof and the floor. This thickness, far surpassing standard garden building insulation, works in tandem with the thick logs to create a highly efficient cabin, minimising heat loss and drastically reducing heating costs.

Elevated Foundation on Swift Pads

Building on a remote, uneven site requires a non-traditional, efficient foundation solution. We utilised elevated base works mounted on Swift Pads. This approach provides several key advantages:

  • Speed: Much faster to install than a full concrete slab.
  • Ventilation: Ensures optimal air circulation beneath the lodge, protecting the base logs from moisture and guaranteeing the long-term structural health of the building.
  • Precision: Allows for precise levelling, essential for maintaining the integrity of the log construction over a 16-metre length.

3. The Bespoke Finish: Antique Pine, Black Accents, and a Wrap Deck

The client’s vision was a classic lodge look with a contemporary edge.

External Aesthetic

The exterior was finished in a beautiful Antique Pine preservative stain. This rich, warm colour gives the cabin its traditional log home appeal. This was elegantly contrasted by the selection of pre-painted black doors and windows. The black frames deliver a sharp, modern border that frames the views of the Anglesey landscape, preventing the structure from feeling overly rustic. The robust quality of these residential-grade windows ensures excellent thermal performance and security.

The Wrap Deck

Integral to the project was the spacious wrap-around deck area. Extending the usable living space outdoors, the deck provides multiple zones for dining, relaxing, and enjoying the sun. This outdoor area serves as a transition zone between the lush garden and the luxurious interior, enhancing the overall lifestyle appeal of the lodge.

The Matching Garage

To complete the property, a substantial 3m x 5m garage was constructed using the same high-quality timber and finished in the matching Antique Pine and black accents. This ensures a cohesive look across the entire property, providing essential storage and vehicle space without compromising the aesthetic integrity of the main lodge.

4. The Turnkey Interior: Ready to Live

The true value of this project for the client was the delivery of a full turnkey solution. This means the lodge was handed over ready for immediate occupancy, with no additional construction needed.

The interior fit-out included:

  • Flooring: A blend of durable, stylish LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) in high-traffic areas, plush carpets in the bedrooms, and professionally oiled floors in the main living space—all chosen for aesthetics and longevity.
  • Amenities: A fully functional kitchen with high-end appliances and cabinetry, and a complete bathroom fit-out (shower/bath, vanity, WC).
  • Climate Control: Installation of a powerful and charming log burner serves as the central focal point and provides reliable heat during colder months, complementing the superior 150mm insulation.
  • Electrics and Utilities: All internal electrics, lighting, and plumbing were installed and certified by our team, providing the client with a worry-free handover.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's

What are Swift Pads, and why were they used for the elevated base?

Swift Pads (or similar pedestal systems) were used for the elevated base works primarily because they are fast, non-disruptive, and highly effective for sites like Anglesey. They allow our builders to create a perfectly level platform, ensuring the structural integrity of the long 16m x 6.8m cabin. They also ensure excellent airflow beneath the lodge, protecting the timber base from moisture and extending the overall lifespan of the structure.

Is 150mm insulation sufficient for year-round residential living?

Absolutely. The combination of 150mm roof and floor insulation with the thermal mass of the 95mm solid wall logs creates a superior thermal envelope. This level of insulation significantly reduces heat loss, making the lodge extremely energy-efficient, comfortable, and warm enough to be used as a permanent, year-round log cabin home in any UK climate.

What does "Full Turnkey Project" include for this lodge?

A "Full Turnkey Project" means the lodge was handed over completely ready for the client to move into. For this Anglesey lodge, it included:

All groundwork and base elevation.

Construction of the 16m x 6.8m lodge and 3m x 5m garage.

Full internal fit-out (kitchen and bathroom installation).

All plumbing, electrics, and certification.

Installation of the log burner.

Complete internal finishes (oiled floors, carpets, and LVT).

What type of maintenance is required for the Antique Pine and Black exterior finish?

The lodge received a pre-treatment in Antique Pine preservative stain, which gives it a classic look while protecting the wood. To maintain its deep colour and provide optimal weatherproofing, we recommend reapplying a coat of exterior preservative or stain every 3 to 5 years, depending on exposure to the coastal elements. The pre-painted black doors and windows are typically low-maintenance and only require cleaning.

What are the main benefits of a 95mm solid wall log compared to a standard thickness?

The 95mm solid wall logs used here offer distinct advantages over standard 44mm or 68mm options: they provide far greater acoustic dampening (ideal for a quiet residential setting), superior structural rigidity, and vastly improved natural heat retention (thermal mass), making the lodge a truly premium and durable residential space.
